Shar Pei

If you look at the Shar Pei breed you will see some different traits and qualities in the Western breeds of the Shar Pei, and shar pei history and eastern breeds of the same dog. In some pictures the more traditional breed and look of the Shar Pei these dogs do not look much like the present western day pictures that you might see of little butterball roly poly wrinkly dogs.

In shar pei history you see that many do think that the blue black tongue of the Shar Pei comes from the Chow Chow. In some provinces of China where the Shar Pei originates from you will see different pictures and different looks to the same Shar Pei breed. Some will say that this is from the enthusiasm with which the Shar Pei breed exploded into the Kennel Clubs of the west in the 1960s and 1970s.

Many of the health problems like eye lashes curling in, and skin and food allergies are not near as common as they once were when the breed was first introduced and hastily bred. These days many responsible and caring breeders will carefully screen and control their breeding stock when it does come down to the health of their offspring and chances to really promote their breed.

This breed can be traced to the province of Kwun Tung and has for centuries existed in the southern provinces of China. The Shar Peis helped their peasant masters with many tasks such as herding cattle, guarding the home and family, and have also proven themselves to be qualified hunters of wild game. This game was usually wild pigs. The Shar Peis were used for generations as fighting dogs, by the Chinese nobility. This eventually had fallen out of favor after the People’s Revolution. After this time many such activities were seen as coming from the decadent class.

It is important to note after the establishment of the Peoples’ Republic of China as a communist nation, the dog population was nearly wiped out. Were it not for the efforts of Matgo Law of Hong Kong, the Shar-Pei might not be here today. Due to his dedication to the breed, a select number of Shar-Pei were brought to the United States in the 1960s and early ’70s. After this time is when an explosion of Shar Pei was created in North America.
