The Mini Shar Pei Can Be An Excellent Pet
The miniature shar pei has been down-sized from a regular-sized shar pei by bringing out the recessive gene. It is still a purebred, just smaller. Even though its ancestry is uncertain, it is said to be from the Chow, but nothing has been proven and the only likeness between the two is the purple tongue.
The shar pei was used as a farm dog in China. It was used for hunting and protecting the farm livestock as well as a protector of the farmer’s family and home. At one time, the shar pei was bred for dog fighting. Since it had such lose skin, the advantage was that the opponent could not get a good hold on him.
It will do okay in an apartment setting so long as it gets regular exercise. It will need that release of energy to remain calm indoors. Since it has a padded head, it can overheat easily and should always have access to water and to shade if outside.
You can expect your miniature shar pei to live to be about ten years old. It may reach a height of seventeen inches or under and weigh between twenty-five and forty pounds. There are some health problems linked to shar peis. They may have kidney problems or they may have skin problems. If a breeder is striving to breed healthy dogs, then these should not be an issue.
The miniature shar pei should be brushed regularly and never trimmed. It does not have an undercoat, It sheds a little all during the year, but it does have a molting period in which bathing once a week and brushing daily can help this condition pass without much problem.
The miniature shar pei will be very loyal to its owner and will be playful and affectionate as well. They will bond well with their family, and will also be friendly to strangers. The miniature shar pei should be introduced to children and other animals while still young so that it will learn to tolerate them without problems. If your family can show that they are ahead of the miniature shar pei puppy in the pecking order at an early age, then he should respond to any family member who gives him a command and make a wonderful pet. It is a very laid back and easy going canine and even though it looks as though it is frowning, it is usually very happy and content.
